$(12)^2=(10+2)^2=100+40+4=144$ Use $(a+b)^2 =a^2 +2ab+b^2.$

$Example:$

$(12)^{2} = (10 + 2)^{2} = 100 + 40 + 4 = 144$

$Note: Always works.$

Works universally, just depends on how easy it is to compute mentally.
